Get to know NC Local
Strengthening access to local news about statewide issues, from Murphy to Manteo.
Our Mission
NC Local is a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization helping people in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties understand how statewide issues and government decisions affect their communities.
At NC Local, we believe a healthier and more connected North Carolina begins with accessible and useful news and information. We deliver original reporting that helps residents understand how statewide issues and government decisions affect their lives where they live. We also strengthen the state’s news ecosystem by partnering, amplifying and collaborating with other newsrooms and community groups to fill gaps in local news.
From Murphy to Manteo, we’re convening North Carolinians to help them feel more connected—to each other, and to our state.
Our Work

Statewide newsroom
We don’t just report on statewide issues and state government decisions; we help communities understand how they’re impacted. Our reporters and contributors work in regions across the state, serving as residents’ guides to what’s happening in Raleigh. We reach people through our newsletters, social media, events and by providing our content to newsrooms across the state, helping them connect statewide issues and government decisions to their local communities.

Collaboration and partnership
We’re the anchor for a thriving news ecosystem. We provide supportive resources, foster and lead collaboration, spark innovative projects and host a statewide annual summit for journalists. Through our Partnership Network, we provide content free of charge to newsrooms. We’re working together toward a shared vision that everyone in NC can access trustworthy local news, and we’re building a stronger foundation for news across the state.

Community listening
We convene communities because they are the center of our work. We host events and listening sessions to hear which issues matter to residents and to understand how to better reach them. Our listening events connect North Carolinians with news providers, and with one another. These conversations are the foundation for our work. They help us find new ways to tell stories and catalyze new initiatives, products and services that meet those needs and fill gaps.
Our Partnerships and Collaborations
Partnership and collaboration are core to NC Local’s model. We collaborate with national and local organizations on projects, events and strategic initiatives. We’re also launching a statewide Partnership Network to allow newsrooms to republish and use our content free-of-charge and to share their content with others across the state. Our Story
Our work is rooted in more than two years of community listening with hundreds of North Carolinians. They helped us understand an important problem to solve: People want to understand how statewide issues—especially decisions made in Raleigh—affect their communities. News business models have evolved along with information needs, and we’ve lost reporters who used to cover statewide topics and others who reported on Raleigh for people in counties across the state. NC Local also grew from efforts to strengthen local journalism led by our predecessor, the NC Local News Workshop, which convened and supported news and information partners since 2020. We believe a strong, collaborative ecosystem is essential for North Carolina’s future, and we’ll continue our support for newsrooms across the state.
